Fire Horse sparks transformative courage and change

This is the Year of the Fire Horse — the year to feel the fear and do it anyway!

Today, Fire Horse bursts forth on the Lunar New Year, and it seems images of this fiery steed are ubiquitous. Fabulous! This is an especially auspicious year for me, as I have been writing and talking about the Elemental Horses for years. The Elemental Horses are the heart of my book, “The Elements of Horse Spirit — The Magical Bond Between Humans and Horses.”

The four earthly elements are Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. The fifth element, Spirit, is ethereal. For each Element, there is a corresponding horse that does the job that most symbolizes that element. In horse terms, Earth is about physical change, and the “heavy horses” (drafts) represent it. Air is about mental change, and the speed horses (racehorses, eventers, and jumpers) represent it. Water is about emotional change, and the elegant dressage horses represent it. But the Fire Horse... ahhhh. Fire is about transformative change, and the horses that go into battle or must act and think quickly represent it.

The Fire Horse has several facets. On one hand, it is a fierce worker and will face danger to obey its rider. That is not the nature of a horse. Most will flee first, and fight only when necessary. When a horse feels the fear and does the job anyway — that is a heart of courage, based upon trust. Horses that were ridden into battle were terrified, but they went forward anyway, despite their instinct to flee from that terrifying cacophony as possible. The horse changed the face and structure of human battle, arguably as much as the ballistic missile. When humans took to the saddle to fight, they were at a distinct advantage. Kingdoms were conquered and created because of horses.

Then there’s the iconic cowhorse, facing down huge cattle, quickly separating them, and driving them onward. While this takes an experienced rider, an accomplished cowboy once told me that he doesn’t direct his horse while cutting cattle. “You just hang on and let the horse do its job.” If you’ve ever watched a skilled cowhorse cut cattle, they are all business... ears flat, and reacting with lightning speed. There’s no fear in a skilled cowhorse.

As we enter into the Year of the Fire Horse, channel that “feel the fear and do it anyway” energy. Acknowledge that you may be terrified, but forge forward anyway. Image that warhorse or cowhorse. Don’t think about the problem—dive in and command it. Have the heart of a Fire Horse and move forward — anyway. Despite the odds. Despite the challenges. Just get ‘er done.

Another facet of Fire Horse is the iconic wild stallion. Imagine that flame-colored stallion, rearing on hind legs and pawing the sky, snorting like a dragon, fire in his eyes. Yes, horses will flee if given a choice, but when there is no choice, they will fight — to the death if necessary. Wild stallions fight for mares and territory, and one of their tactics is to bite at the legs of an opponent in an effort to knock him to the ground. Once on the ground, that stallion will pound the downed horse over and over with his front hooves until that horse gives up. If it dies... that is not the victor’s concern.

How might you make use of that energy when facing seemingly insurmountable tasks or situations? While harming others is not an option, crushing the problem is. How can you “bite the legs” of that problem, and bring it down? How can you smash it with your own “hooves”? Moreover, what do you need to do to fuel that fiery, wild nature that will not be dominated?

Yes, Fire Horse is a bit of a conundrum. On one hand, it is the untamable wild spirit. On the other, it channels that wild spirit into ferocious battle and circumstances. Just like fire itself, Fire Horse is an entire spectrum. It can burn everything down and leave nothing but scorched earth, or it can be handled with skill and care to provide light, heat, and warmth. Likewise, learn to handle your own fire. You may not need to destroy every situation. Maybe you just need to provide heat and light. The key point is that whether raging or dancing candlelight, fire is transformative. If you want change, you must channel your own inner fire. And Fire Horse will be there to carry you to that change you seek.
